Three current strategies

Screening strategies currently fall into three major categories:

1. Cytology-based programs with high-risk HPV (hrHPV) as a triage in patients with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) cytology prior to colposcopy

2. Co-testing programs that utilize both Pap cytology and hrHPV testing for the initial screening test

3. HPV-based programs where an hrHPV test is used as the initial screening test

Specific approaches vary within regions, countries, and even regions within countries based on a number of factors, such as presence of an organized screening program, enforcement of national guidelines, and payer/reimbursement infrastructures. Age must also be considered in determining the appropriate approach for each patient.
